Virendra Sharma MP letter to the Evening Standard

es-comment_0.jpg

Today a letter I authored with other London Labour MPs appeared in the London Evening Standard.

The continuing reports of protests and threats aimed at MPs and their offices along with activists are very concerning. The appalling murder of Jo Cox two weeks ago means these threats have now taken on a much more sinister undertone.

There is no place for intimidation and threats of violence in our ongoing political debate, or anywhere in a democratic society. It is not right that activists and MP’s staff have been subjected to aggressive behaviour and threatening phone calls. Constituency staff provide support to constituents and should not be afraid to carry out their work. We are proud of the democratic traditions of the Labour Party, and the tolerance we have always embraced. We all condemn any use of threats or physical violence within political discourse and will not work with those that do.”
