Virendra Sharma MP has condemned the drastic cuts imposed by the government, citing that there will be a return of a 'trolley culture' to London's hospitals, with patients left waiting for days to be seen by a doctor. Mr Sharma who sits on the all-party health select committee said:
"As a result of the cuts, there will be more pressure on GPs, more pressures on hospitals and patients will not get the care they need. We will have more sick people. The policies of this government are finance-led not needs-led"
The Ealing and Southall MP added: "Our health system is what helped build this nation. If this is affected, it has the potential to destroy the nation. It will bring back the trolley culture, where people are left for days on end on trolleys waiting to be seen. In the long run, it will cost us more"
These cuts contrast to the pre-election pledges made by David Cameron, to protect the NHS. The Health Secretary Andrew Lansley announced that upto £20 billion in savings need to be made by 2014, threatening up to 27,000 medical jobs across Britain according to the Royal College of Nurses. Mr Sharma and Labour colleagues will continue to oppose the proposals, which in Mr Sharma's own words have the potential to 'destroy the nation'.
