After a huge outreach campaign, I was very pleased to hear that 2-year-old Gaurav Bains found a bone marrow donor, without which he would develop an aggressive form of childhood leukaemia.
I would like to thank everyone who took part in the initiative to help Gaurav find a matching donor. There is a severe lack of Asian bone marrow donors and the problem is exacerbated when we realise that only 4% of those people on stem cell registers have features that match those required by Asian patients.
It was deeply satisfying to know the contribution the local community and the Anthony Nolan charity played in raising awareness and supporting the campaign to save Gaurav’s life from leukaemia.
It is vitally important that more Asian people register to be bone marrow donors, so that others like Gaurav receive the transplant. Please consider registering here.
