Labour’s Plans for Patients to see a GP within 48 hours

2014.05.14_Andy_Burnham-_See_GP_within_48_hours.jpgThe Labour Party has revealed new plans to guarantee local patients a GP appointment within 48 hours.

With the recent cuts throughout the NHS, under this Tory-led Government, a quarter of people now cannot get an appointment with their local GP within the same week, let alone the same day. This has added further pressure and strain on A&E departments as more and more patients have little option but to visit the hospital to seek medical advice.

Labour has revealed in the new plans that an extra £100 million a year will be given to GP surgeries across the country in order to meet demand; this will contribute to an additional three million GP appointments every year, meaning there will be a decrease on the pressure placed upon A&Es.

New figures show that the number of patients getting a GP appointment within 48 hours has fallen from 80 per cent under the last Labour government to just 40 per cent under the Tory-led Government.

It is about time that patients’ needs and requirements were put at the forefront.

I am proud that Labour is the party addressing this issue with a plan to tackle the long waiting queues that we have to see a GP. I back Labour’s plans to raise standards for patients and guarantee them an appointment with a GP within 48 hours or on the same day if need be.
