Tory Mayor to cut staff and close ticket offices at tube stations

The Tory Mayor of London has ripped up his manifesto promise to the people of London to keep ticket offices open. All 260 TFL stations ticket offices are to be closed by the end 2015 and replaced by 10 travel hubs at the biggest commuter stations.

Boris Johnson is to cut staffing levels, which is reckless and irresponsible. There are serious concerns about whether there will be enough staff at London’s busy stations to respond to emergencies and Londoners will feel worried travelling at times when stations are undermanned and commuters will have nowhere to turn when their Oyster card is lost, stolen or broken.

On January 15th, a debate was held in Westminster Hall on this issue, where I was able to question the impact of this decision on the safety of passengers in London, particularly following the brutal attack on a station attendant at Northfields station a few months ago.
